Magendala David

The Rabbi at my shul is leaving, and I wanted to give him a present.  Obviously, I’m not Jewish, I just work there, but I work extensively with the Rabbis (or Rabbinim if you’re fancy) and they know I’m Pagan and we joke about it all the time.  He said, “You know I can’t have any Pagan symbols on my desk at the new place.”  I told him I wouldn’t do that to him.

I’d been working on turning a Magen David into a Mandala for about six weeks, I think, on and off.

The beginning stages of it.

I had shaded the items in the center, but I had no clue what to do with the outer edges. Eventually, I figured I’d try polka dots. I never liked them, but I thought it would be a texture that hadn’t been on the piece yet.

They came out stellar. In addition, I took the band in the center and made it more like rope.

There comes a time with mandalas where you just have to let them go.  They’re so hypnotic, and there’s always something extra you can add.  It was time to just release the thing into the wild, you know?

I love this piece.  I love every little curve and curlicue.
